BACKGROUND:
The growth in mobile software for platforms such as Android and Apple iOS is exploding with apps being developed across diverse industries, including, gaming, banking, entertainment, shopping, and travel. Industry analyst firm ARM reports that more than 550,000 ARM-powered Android devices are being activated daily. And according to analyst firm IDC, the market for mobile applications will continue to accelerate as the number of downloaded apps is expected to increase from 10.9 billion worldwide in 2010 to 76.9 billion in 2014.

This growth in mobile applications is also attracting attention from hackers and attackers that target the application layer. According to McAfee, in the second quarter of 2011, Android OS-based malware surpassed Symbian OS for the most popular target for mobile malware developers, with stories of malware and other attacks on smartphones and tablets continuing to make headlines with increased regularity.
