The openness of the Android market has increasingly impressed consumers and incented rapid adoption.  As 160,000 Android phones are sold per day, Android is building a rich application (just over 65,000) and content infrastructure. 

However, the spotlight on security concerns over Android applications has also intensified.  Consumers and organizations are cautioned against seemingly legitimate Android apps that when downloaded, have spawned malware, theft of private user information and intellectual property, resulting in adverse business impacts.

As rapid adoption of Android applications continues, businesses and end consumers alike can be exposed to insecurities that allow unauthorized access, application tampering or piracy.  These attacks threaten the security of Android consumers,  as well as the integrity of businesses providing Android applications.

"The two pieces of malware hitting the Android OS now are examples of why application providers for Android need to protect their apps from code modification through, for example, the insertion of Trojans," Arxan's Morgan said. "More fundamentally, the issue is, how can you have an application-extendable device and not run the risk that users will load applications that contain malware?"
