What is a “Value Stream”?

Value Streams represent the series of steps that an organization uses to implement solutions (products, services, or systems) that provide a continuous flow of value to a customer. A SAFe portfolio contains one or more development value streams, each of which is dedicated to build and support a set of solutions. In turn, these development value streams help the Enterprise achieve its business strategy by either: implementing systems that enable the enterprise to carry out its business operations, which SAFe calls an operational value stream (e.g., loan origination, invoicing, onboarding new hires) delivering value directly to customers, such as the development of a product or service (e.g., iPhone, Netflix). What is “Value Stream Management”?

Value stream management in software is derived from lean manufacturing practices. In the software world, value stream management (VSM) provides end-to-end visibility across the entire software pipeline and interoperable toolchain enabling organizations to track, measure, and optimize the flow of value from concept to cash.
