Enterprise Apps Are NOT Infrastructure

Business man pointing at cloud computingJust a few years ago releasing high quality enterprise apps was only within arms reach of a small percentage of companies. That’s because developing, deploying, and managing them has traditionally been a cumbersome process carried out over a long chain of environments, platforms, and third-party entities. Not surprisingly, this equated to a significant investment in time and infrastructure at a cost that many enterprises simply could not justify.

Fast-forward to the present day and it has become much easier to unlock enterprise mobility. What’s changed? There are a number of factors at play here, but the shift can largely be attributed to advances in mobile application management (MAM®) and cloud computing. Recent developments in these two technology fields have taken a lot of the overhead -- and the infrastructure -- out of administering and managing enterprise mobile apps. Let’s start with mobile application management. As a platform, it works as a single point in which IT departments can handle the packaging, deployment and management of their mobile application. More than this, MAM can be used to deal with content management, security, and user policies without SDKs or device profiles. In addition to mobile application management, enterprises can leverage the power of cloud computing to further reduce their overall investment. By taking advantage of enterprise mobility solutions, enterprises can develop responsive, feature-rich applications that can easily be wrapped for installation on a wide range of mobile devices. The bottom line is that enterprise apps are NOT infrastructure and the barrier into full enterprise mobility has come down. Cloud based hybrid development platforms eliminate the need to invest in proprietary development environments, facilitate a no-SDK approach, and can drastically reduce physical infrastructure expenditures.
