A recently-released study of 1,700 senior IT decision makers across 17 countries commissioned by Citrix
finds that 71% of enterprises view mobility as a top priority for their organizations, while 63% see mobility as the greatest factor in helping their companies gain a competitive advantage. Moreover, the study reveals that rising adoption of a mobile application management (MAM™)
approach is enabling companies to drive productivity to new heights.
Of the respondents, 48% indicated that their organizations are using mobile device management (MDM)
while 47% have adopted MAM™. These findings suggest a few trends with respect to mobile management approaches being taken by enterprises. As EnterpriseAppsTech’s James Bourne notes in an article
about the study, “As MAM solutions become more pervasive, any gap that was there (between MDM and MAM adoption rates) has all but disappeared.”
Meanwhile, Citrix director of product marketing Chandra Sekar points out to Bourne in the same article that “we noticed that mobility is an ‘I don’t know what I don’t know’-type situation with a lot of organizations. They are doing mobile in somewhat of an ad-hoc way.”
We like to think that forward-thinking CIOs and other IT leaders are increasingly recognizing the benefits that mobile application management offers to IT, business units, and end users and why it offers substantial operational and business value over an ad-hoc approach to mobile management. While MDM is focused on securing control over mobile devices that are increasingly owned by employees, mobile application management balances the management and security requirements of IT and the enterprise while respecting the rights and device ownership of employees.

Other highlights from the study include:
- BYOD (bring your own device) is quickly becoming the norm, with 74% of companies allowing, accommodating, and encouraging the use of employee-owned devices.
- 51% of IT leaders say they are changing management processes to better manage mobile employees working on any device from anywhere.
- Half (50%) of organizations say that the enterprise apps they acquire will comprise a mix of in-house developed apps and off-the-shelf apps.
- The most popular apps being demanded by employees are sales, CRM, or database related (48%) while employee intranet portals (46%), messaging apps (43%), social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn (43%) and file sync and sharing platforms (41%) round out the most popular.
