Samsung's AR Vision Includes Smart Contact Lenses

The Story: South Korea has recently granted Samsung a patent for a smart contact lens with a display that can project images straight into the user's eye. What does it mean? The patent application shows a contact lens equipped with a tiny display, camera, antenna, and several sensors that detect movement and blinking. Sensors pick up the user's blinks and relay the commands they indicate to the user's smartphone for processing. The results are then sent back to the lens almost immediately. With contact lenses instead of glasses, users will be able to enjoy augmented reality content more discreetly. According to the application, the primary reason for the development of smart contact lenses is the limited image quality that can be achieved with smart glasses. Lenses give a more natural way of providing augmented reality than smart glasses. Sounds difficult... It is. The science involved in this type of project might be problematic. Will the camera lens be small enough to not obscure part of the visual field? Will the lens irritate the eye? What about the weight, will the lens make the contact feel heavy to the wearer? Lastly, how will the lens be powered to communicate with the user's smartphone? These are all questions we ask ourselves as we long await the production of Smart Contact Lenses, which seems to still be in concept stage.
