Apple & the San Bernardino Case...

The story? If you haven't heard by now, the hot topic of the week is the dispute between Apple and the FBI over unlocking a gunman's iPhone from the San Bernardino shooting. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, decided it was time to take a stand when asked to update the operating system and enable the FBI to get into the locked phone that was recovered from one of the shooters, Syed Rizwan.

Apple's position? Tim Cook shared a letter to customers on Wednesday morning explaining that the United States government request would ultimately create a "backdoor" that threatens the security and privacy of all iOS users. Cook includes in the note that while he and all of Apple have sympathy and want just for all those affected by the San Bernardino case, he opposes the order because of the "dangerous precedent" it could cause.

FBI's position? The FBI along with many other law enforcement officials including the Department of Justice and federal prosecutors feel that Apple's encryption is "counterproductive to investigations because information cannot be accessed", explained Pui-Wing Tam of The New York Times. Such information could be vital to providing justice in the San Bernardino case among many others.

Get all the details from Eric Lichtblau and Katie Benner of The New York Times in their article, "Apple Fights Order to Unlock San Bernardino Gunman's iPhone". Read Tim Cooks' "Message to Our Customers" on the Apple website.
