Setting the Stage for an App-Driven Mobile Enterprise

Try leaving your cell phone (iPhone, Blackberry or Android) at home for a day and you may feel a little vulnerable. You might miss an important text, email or even Facebook status. You can imagine the vulnerability PC manufacturers are feeling right now. With PC shipments predicted to fall as much as 7.8 percent in the next quarter (IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker), the stage has been set for a mobile app-driven world and a mobile enterprise. IDC predicts that by 2015, we'll see tablets "outpace the entire PC market (portables and desktops combined)" -- but what's driving the move from PC to mobile? Mobile devices are making it easier to accomplish everyday work in a more "lightweight" device and less need for on-device storage. In a recent statement from IDC, Program VP Loren Loverde said, "Many users are realizing that everyday computing, such as accessing the Web, connecting to social media, sending emails, as well as using a variety of apps, doesn't require a lot of computing power or local storage." Another contributing factor to the fall of the PC in the enterprise is the number of employees participating in the bring your own device (BYOD) movement. IDC reports that as many as 25% of organizations allow their employees to purchase their own computer for work -- a trend that is quickly erasing the need for corporate PC purchase programs, Bob O'Donnell, IDC's VP of Clients and Displays Programs said. So, how does this affect mobile application management (MAM) and the mobile enterprise? Well, it makes it more of a priority. As IDC says; "IT service providers who are ignoring mobile device management (MDM) and bring your own device (BYOD) may find themselves in vulnerable positions in years to come." Our take: We think it's a given that enterprise apps are the drivers of anywhere, anytime access to company and personal resources such as; email, dashboards, order entry, etc. Focusing on apps as a driver of a mobile enterprise will put your company ahead of the curve in employee productivity and protection from the top mobile application security threats.
