The Enterprise Mobility Opportunity in the Federal Space
Over the past several years, the U.S. federal government has sharpened its focus on IT investments. As part of its efforts, the White House has been actively increasing citizen access to public data while making public services more operationally efficient. This includes how the federal government is attempting to invest more judiciously in IT and enterprise mobility solutions. From FY 2001 to FY 2009, total IT spending for all federal agencies was rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.09%, according to The White House. But the rate of spending on IT by federal agencies has plummeted to just 0.78% CAGR from FY 2009 to FY 2014.
Despite the overall slowdown in federal IT spending, there are tremendous opportunities for enterprise mobility investments. Enterprise mobility can help agencies collaborate more effectively internally and with other government entities. A recent study conducted by MeriTalk, a public-private partnership focused on improving the outcomes of government IT, reveals that federal agencies stand to gain 364 hours of annual productivity – or nearly $14,000 worth of taxpayer-funded work – if they had mobile access and remote connectivity for all employees. The findings, based on a survey of 209 federal employees at the GS-13 level or above who use mobile devices for work, illustrates that federal employees would each gain seven additional hours of productivity each week if they didn't encounter slow connections, cumbersome security policies and limited access to data. Despite these challenges, the survey respondents indicate that more mobility would improve their productivity and the operational effectiveness of federal agencies. Seventy percent of the survey respondents say they can’t get the information they need to do their jobs effectively.
